In this tutorial you will learn the basic functions and features of VestaCP’s implemented File Manager. It is very important to learn how to use it since it provides complete management of your website’s files and folders.
VestaCP’s File Manager gives you useful options to quickly manage your files within the interface. It’s easy to use and it removes the hassles of using FTP. You can create, upload, modify or remove files from this interface.
Important: VestaCP’s File Manager is a premium plugin. You need to buy the license of it from http://vestacp.com/pricing/ in order to activate it on the control panel.
Step 1 – Finding The File Manager
You should be able to see File Manager immediately after opening VestaCP on the menu bar. Open it!

In the following steps, we will explain all the features of File Manager.
Step 2 – Accessing Website’s Directory
All of your domains are located in the web folder. Single click on the word “web”.
Here you will see all of domains
Click on the domain which you would like to manage. Then, you will see another windows with all the required files for your website to work. Do not touch any folder/file except public_html. After clicking on public_html, you will see all the contents of your website.
Step 3 – Creating a new folder
Folders make it easier to organize and structure your domain. They make the maintenance of your site much easier. You can easily list the files in every folder. Most web sites include at least an /image folder to keep all the image files separately.
To create a new folder, follow the following steps…
1 – Click on new NEW DIR
2 – Now, you will see a new window to create a new directory. Simply, enter the directory name and click on CREATE.
Step 4 – Uploading files in File Manager
1 – You can start uploading files through File Manager by clicking on the UPLOAD button.
2 – Browse your file and open it!
3 – You will now see an upload status bar. Wait for it to complete and disappear.
Step 5 – Creating a new file
You can directly create text files using the File Manager itself.
1 – Click on the NEW FILE button.
2 – Enter the name of the file to be created and don’t forget to put an extension at the end. For example, for an HTML file put (dot)html i.e file.html.
3 – Click on CREATE
Step 6 – Creating a new file
You can directly edit your web files using the file editor available inside VestaCP itself. This is useful for making small changes.
1 – Double click on the file which you would like to open and then a new window will popup
2 – Alter the contents of the file and click on SAVE (located on the top right corner of the website
3 – Your file has now been updated with the changes you did.
Step 7 – Downloading a file
Follow these to download files/folders.
1 – Select the files/folders you would like to download.
2 – Click on the Download button
Step 8 – Extracting a file
It’s really boring to upload every file one by one, but with this File Manager you can directly upload a compressed file and Extract it.
1 – Upload your compressed file
2 – Select the compresses file and click on the EXTRACT button
3 – A new window will popup asking you where you want to extract your files. Don’t make any changes if you want to extract the files to the same directory.
4 – Click on extract
Step 9 – Compressing multiple files/folder/folders into one
With VestaCP you can directly compress files and folders and then download it.
1 – Select the files and folders you would like to compress into one.
2 – Click on the COMPRESS button
Step 10 – Renaming files/folders
Follow these steps to rename a file
1 – Select the file/folder you would like to rename.
2 – Click on the RENAME button.
3 – A new window will popup for renaming the file. Enter the new name for the file and click on RENAME
Step 11 – Deleting files/folders
Follow these steps to delete a file
1 – Select the file/folder you would like to delete.
2 – Click on the DELETE button.
3 – A new windows will popup to confirm the Deletion. Click on DELETE
Step 12 – Copying files/folders
1 – Select the files/folders which you would like to copy.
2 – Click on the COPY button.
3 – Choose the directory where you would like to copy your files and click on COPY.
Step 13 – Moving files/folders
1 – Select the files/folders which you would like to move.
2 – Click on the MOVE button.
3 – Choose the directory where you would like to move your files and click on MOVE.
Step 14 – Setting file/folder permissions/rights
We recommend not to do anything with this unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing because setting the wrong permissions to the files might cause issues with your website.
1 – Select the files/folders you would like to edit the permissions of
2 – Click on the rights button
3 – A new windows will popup for changing the permissions. Set the necessary permissions and Click on OK.
